Programme Period

2023

About the Programme

The certainty of employment status, minimum wage, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), social security, and general labor regulations have become primary issues in the palm oil industry in Indonesia. In order to achieve a harmonious and sustainable industrial relationship, the Trade Union Rights Centre (TURC) is implementing the “Strengthening Independent Labor Unions for Decent Work in the Palm Oil Plantations in Indonesia” through the Trade Union Cooperation Program (TUCP). Since 2018, TURC has been supported by Mondiaal FNV in carrying out this program.

Programme Goals

The TURC program in the palm oil sector aims to enhance and strengthen the capacity of labor unions, enabling them to advocate for decent and inclusive working conditions, including gender equality. This objective is achieved through data-driven methods and supply chain interventions in palm oil plantations in Indonesia. The strategies are implemented by TURC in collaboration with its partners.

Main Programme Activities

  • Enhancing leadership capacity for labor unions to advocate for and improve the well-being of their members and their families, including organizing, education, and training
  • Increasing the interest and participation of female labor in labor unions, including advocating for issues specific to women workers, such as sexual violence in the workplace
  • Enhancing the knowledge and skills of labor unions in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), supply chains, and data collection
  • Improving the advocacy skills of labor unions to address issues in the workplace, both through litigation and non-litigation methods such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Complaints System
  • Encouraging labor unions to actively engage in lobbying, negotiations, social dialogue, campaigns, and advocacy with stakeholders in the supply chain to improve working conditions.
